# Internal links

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Internal links connect pages within the same site. They let readers move on to an explanation, documentation, or next step, and help search engines discover pages and understand relationships. A useful link combines a relevant destination, recognizable text, and appropriate placement. Its purpose is not merely to distribute supposed value among URLs.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), the link structure should follow the user journey. Someone reading a definition may need a guide; someone comparing alternatives may need hiring criteria. Links also reveal the collection’s priorities. A published page with no paths to it on the site can be hard to find, even when its URL is in a [sitemap](/en/resources/glossary/sitemap).

## Practical example

An entry about [AI citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) can link to [citation rate](/en/resources/glossary/citation-rate) and [grounding](/en/resources/glossary/grounding) because these concepts help interpret the metric. An automatic link from “AI” to any generic page, repeated in every paragraph, provides less context. If the destination is still a draft, the link may also frustrate the reader or expose unsuitable material.

## How to apply or check

Choose meaningful conceptual relationships and genuine next steps. Check the final URL, publication status, indexability when needed, and [anchor text](/en/resources/glossary/anchor-text). Use navigable link elements and test the journey on mobile and with a keyboard. In automation, limit repetition and resolve ambiguous terms; two pages should not silently compete to be the automatic destination for the same word.

## Important distinctions

Internal links do not replace content or require a fixed density per page. A topic-related link is different from duplicating the menu in every section. There is also no need to create new text for every variation of a term. The best test is simple: does the destination offer a continuation that matches what the link promises and what the reader needs?
