# Inline domain

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An inline domain is the domain associated with a reference inserted alongside the text of an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response), rather than appearing only in a separate source block. Inline means inserted into the flow of the text. The label describes the reference’s location and allows its destinations to be grouped, but does not by itself identify which page was used in that response.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this distinction helps verify where a reference accompanies a claim and which sites appear in that space. It also helps avoid attributing a [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) to the wrong page when multiple URLs on the same domain cover different topics. Analysis should preserve the full address before summarizing results by domain or by position in the response’s presentation.

## Practical example

Imagine a publisher finding its domain alongside a sentence about a book’s recommended age. The report records only the domain, but the link points to a review of another edition. By checking the URL, the team identifies the discrepancy and decides to correct the attribution in the report before evaluating the book’s sales page.

## How to apply or verify

Inspect the link associated with the passage and save the full URL, domain, position, and a screenshot of the response. Check redirects and the final page. If you have authorized access to structured API data, compare this information with the citation notes. Document the rule for grouping subdomains; it affects the total attributed to each site in the analyzed dataset.

## Important distinctions

Inline domain is not synonymous with cited URL: a domain can encompass numerous pages and authors. Nor does inline placement prove the model’s preference or greater trust compared with the source block. Some interfaces show a marker or title instead of the written domain. Classification depends on the link and its location, not on how the label looks.
