# Inline citation

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An inline [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) is a reference inserted in the body of a response, close to a sentence or passage. It may appear as a clickable marker, number, or link, depending on the interface. In the OpenAI API search, citation annotations provide the URL, title, and position in the text, allowing the reference to be associated with the passage where it appears.

## Why it matters for marketing

For a content team, this association makes it possible to examine which information received a reference and what readers will find when they open it. This is useful for assessing product descriptions, [terms of use](/en/terms), and comparisons. Counting markers without reading the passages can hide citations that point to pages unable to support the information presented.

## Example in practice

Imagine a response about equipment insurance stating that water damage is covered, with an inline citation at the end of the sentence. When the analyst opens the document, they find that only fire damage is covered. They record the marker and the discrepancy, and request a correction to the response instead of counting the reference as supporting evidence.

## How to apply or verify

Select the marker, record the destination URL, and read the passage that should support the claim. Compare the product, version, date, and conditions mentioned. In your own integrations, also check the position indicated in the annotation and how it appears as a clickable element. If a sentence combines several facts, verify each one; visual proximity does not remove the need to read.

## Important distinctions

Inline citation describes the location of the reference, not its quality or accuracy. The same document may have several markers, so the number of citations is not the same as the number of distinct pages. A reference also does not represent a brand recommendation or a user click. A separate list of sources requires a different record of position in the interface.
