# Informational prompt

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An informational [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) is a request to understand a topic, clarify a question, or obtain a fact. The expected response is knowledge that is useful for answering the question, without needing to choose an offer or complete a transaction. Its scope varies: it may involve a specific piece of information or a detailed explanation. The conversation context helps identify this predominant intent.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this type of question guides content that explains the problem, the terminology, and the conditions for using a solution. A useful answer may help someone evaluate a purchase later, but the current question needs to be addressed on its own terms. Measuring only sales leads overlooks the accuracy and usefulness of this explanation.

## Example in practice

Imagine a publisher asking what “print run” means on a print order. The response adds together the copies from previous editions, even though the document refers to a single production order. When checking the order with the printer, the publisher spots the error. They decide to publish an explanation of the field, with an example of how to fill it in and its context.

## How to apply or verify

To verify, define the question, the expected level of detail, and the conditions that could change the answer. Check facts and explanations against appropriate sources, distinguishing facts, interpretations, and points that remain uncertain. Ask for clarification when the topic is ambiguous. Google’s guidelines distinguish simple information needs from broader exploration; this distinction helps assess whether the content is sufficient.

## Important distinctions

Informational does not necessarily mean simple, short, or unrelated to a purchase. A single request may combine learning with evaluating alternatives. A request for instructions may also involve a practical activity, depending on the context. Classification is an editorial analysis tool; it does not determine whether there will be a click, [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), purchase, or a correct model response.
