# Information gain

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Information gain is the useful contribution content adds relative to a knowledge base and a task. It can come from proprietary data, explanations of underdiscussed conditions, or analysis that resolves a question. The gain depends on what was already available and what the reader needs to understand or decide.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the concept helps assess whether a topic merits production or merely repeats existing pages. A definition rewritten in different words may add little. Identifying the unanswered question guides interviews, documentation, and research. The priority becomes a verifiable contribution for the audience, rather than increasing the volume of content.

## Example in practice

Imagine a packaging manufacturer preparing a guide to storing coffee. The materials consulted explain the moisture barrier but do not show how to assess the seal after opening. The team could document this procedure, its conditions, and its limitations. The gain would be enabling readers to assess the seal, beyond the already familiar explanation of moisture.

## How to apply or verify

Compare the proposal with the sources the audience would likely consult. Record which question remains open, what the new explanation adds, and the evidence needed to support it. For the packaging guide, check whether the procedure really clarifies how to assess the seal. A review with readers can reveal whether the information helps or merely increases complexity.

## Important distinctions

Writing originality and information gain are different things: a synthesis can be useful without producing new data. Google's patent on the subject describes gain relative to documents previously seen by the user. Its existence does not prove implementation in Search, an official ranking factor, or a universal originality score for pages.
