# Indexing

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Indexing is the stage in which a search engine analyzes a page’s content and stores information in its index for possible display in search results. It occurs after discovery and access, but not every crawled page is indexed. The system considers the content and various signals, including indexing instructions and relationships between similar versions.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), this distinction is essential when investigating a missing page. The URL may open for people and still not appear in search. The issue may involve [noindex](/en/resources/glossary/noindex), [canonical](/en/resources/glossary/canonical), incomplete access, duplication, or a decision by the system. Before changing titles or producing another article, it is important to understand which stage is causing the difficulty.

## Example in practice

A published guide appears in the [sitemap](/en/resources/glossary/sitemap) and returns 200, but is not yet indexed. These two facts show that discovery is possible and the server responds; they do not prove inclusion. In another scenario, Google selects a different version as canonical. The data and search presence may be associated with that version, not the URL the team expected.

## How to apply or check

Use URL Inspection and the indexing reports in [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console) to observe the status in Google. Compare directives, the declared canonical, resources, and content. Check samples of pages using the same template to distinguish a shared defect from an individual case. After a fix, monitor for a new crawl and status, without presenting an indexing request as completed inclusion.

## Important distinctions

Indexing is not the same as a good ranking, a visit, or an [AI citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). Each platform may have its own [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) mechanisms, and a result in Google does not prove inclusion in all of them. For Google’s generative searches, Search fundamentals remain relevant. Preserve this specificity when interpreting technical tests and presence in responses.
