# Impression-only report

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

An impression-only report is a way of tracking recorded appearances of content or a link, without providing a measure of subsequent actions for that view. On AI surfaces, it can show exposure according to the service’s rules, without showing clicks or purchases. Check the definition of an impression before interpreting the number as reach.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this report helps track exposure, but requires goals that match what it actually measures. Google Search’s generative report shows impressions for [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode); it does not provide a conversion count on that screen. The team can track trends and exposed pages while keeping what is observable separate from hypotheses about audience response.

## Practical example

Imagine a school sees an increase in impressions for its courses page in the generative report. The person responsible presents the rise as growth in enrollments, although they have not checked any enrollment figures. The team corrects the interpretation to recorded exposure for that page and checks the commercial action measurement separately. It preserves the observed increase without attributing an unsubstantiated outcome to it.

## How to apply or verify

Check the surface, impression rule, aggregation unit, and period. Investigate whether totals by page and by property use different counts, and identify preliminary or unavailable data. To assess subsequent actions, find an appropriate source and state its linking rules. Do not divide conversions from a different population by impressions from this report as if the two sets were automatically associated.

## Important distinctions

An impression does not prove attention, human reading, or a positive recommendation. A report without clicks does not let you conclude that no clicks occurred; it may simply not offer that metric for that view. Other systems and screens have their own methods. Recorded exposure, a [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) in a sample of responses, and an identified visit are distinct objects that can be analyzed together without losing sight of their bases and limitations.
