# Hallucinated claims about a brand

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Hallucinated claims about a brand are generated statements that invent or attribute information without verifiable support, such as characteristics, customers, prices, or areas served. They may sound specific and confident, but that presentation does not prove they are accurate. To define a claim as hallucinated, check the fact and its source; information unknown to the team should not automatically be classified as invented before investigation.

## Why it matters for marketing

In marketing, a false claim can change how people understand an offering and lead to an inappropriate comparison. The team needs to distinguish what the system said from what the organization actually offers, using current, verifiable data. Favorable visibility does not make up for invented attributes. Priority depends on the claim’s content and consequences, without assuming how many people received the same response.

## Example in practice

Imagine an event planning company described by an assistant as having a branch in Recife, even though it has no such location. The team checks official addresses and the cited source, records the false passage, and prepares accurate information about its service area. It requests a correction when it identifies an external publication responsible for the claim, without attributing the nonexistent branch to a real change in the company.

## How to apply or verify

Sample relevant questions and save the response, platform, date, and cited sources. Compare each claim with current documentation, recording contradictions and cases that are not yet verifiable. Investigate whether the problem comes from your own content, an external source, a namesake, or an unsupported summary. Correct materials under your control and monitor new responses; not finding the error in one sample does not prove it has disappeared in every context.

## Important distinctions

An invented claim differs from an opinion, a substantiated criticism, and information that was true in an earlier version. Outdated information and [entity confusion](/en/resources/glossary/entity-confusion) need their own diagnoses, even when they produce factual errors. A [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) may support another sentence without proving the claim being examined. Monitoring can document occurrences, but does not by itself reveal the internal mechanism or guarantee that the assistant will repeat a correction.
