# Google Search Console

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Google Search Console is a free Google service for monitoring and investigating a site's presence in Google Search. It provides performance reports, [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) information, and tools such as URL Inspection. The site owner can view queries, impressions, and clicks for the available reporting scope. Using the service is not a requirement for appearing in search results.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), Search Console helps distinguish discovery issues from editorial opportunities. A page with no clicks may not be indexed, may appear for irrelevant queries, or may receive impressions without visits. Each situation calls for a different investigation. Checking performance and URL status helps avoid attributing every drop in traffic to the quality of the text or a change in position.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store publishes an equipment installation page and sees no clicks for it. In URL Inspection, Google reports a different URL as [canonical](/en/resources/glossary/canonical) in the indexed version. The team compares the two pages and their settings before requesting [reindexing](/en/resources/glossary/reindexing). The evidence points to a page identity issue, without proving that changing the title will solve the problem.

## How to apply or verify

Use the property corresponding to the site and record the date range, search type, page, and report filters. In URL Inspection, distinguish data for the indexed version from the live test. Check the canonical selected in the indexed data and examine the stated reason for exclusion. After making a correction, monitor a new crawl; requesting indexing does not confirm immediate inclusion.

## Important distinctions

Search Console does not measure all activity within a site, a function served by tools such as [Google Analytics](/en/resources/glossary/google-analytics). A live test shows access and indexability conditions, but does not predict which canonical will be selected or guarantee presence in search results. Impressions, clicks, and position are distinct metrics; search reports also do not automatically represent visibility on every AI platform.
