# Google-Extended

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Google-Extended is a [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt) control token with no dedicated HTTP User-Agent. It governs Google's use of crawled content to train future generations of [Gemini](/en/resources/glossary/gemini) models that power Gemini Apps and Vertex AI API for Gemini. It also controls [grounding](/en/resources/glossary/grounding)—supporting responses with content retrieved from the [Search index](/en/resources/glossary/search-index)—in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI.

## Why it matters for marketing

This control lets you address content use by Gemini systems separately from your presence in Google Search. For marketing, the decision requires identifying the surface and intended use before changing permissions. A vague request to block AI can conflate training, grounding, and the [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) features, which are part of Search.

## Example in practice

Imagine a publisher that keeps public guides in Search but decides to restrict the uses covered by Google-Extended. The technical team configures the token in robots.txt and records the rule applied to the guides. The agency tracks the status of these pages in [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console) separately, without interpreting the configuration as removal from results or as erasure of the models' knowledge.

## How to apply or verify

Review the Google-Extended group in the robots.txt published for the correct host and confirm the paths covered by Allow and Disallow. Don't expect to find a dedicated HTTP header with this name in logs: [crawling](/en/resources/glossary/crawling) uses existing Google identifiers. Document the rule's purpose and check the operator's current documentation when the intended use changes.

## Important distinctions

Google-Extended does not control inclusion or ranking in Google Search. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google documents crawl controls through [Googlebot](/en/resources/glossary/googlebot), preview controls through their own rules, and [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) controls through [noindex](/en/resources/glossary/noindex). The token governs the described uses for Gemini; blocking it does not demonstrate removal of content already learned and does not function as a request to exclude content from Search.
