# Google Analytics

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Google Analytics is a data analysis tool for websites and apps. In the GA4 generation, data is collected as events, which record occurrences such as a page view, click, or purchase. Reports help describe user journeys and observed actions. The available information depends on the implementation, the parameters sent, and the collection conditions for each property.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, Analytics helps relate acquisition channels to actions on the site, such as requesting a quote or completing a purchase. The team needs to define what each event represents before comparing results. A visit to a confirmation page may indicate a step in the user journey, but by itself does not confirm payment, lead quality, or recognized revenue.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school advertising a course and tracking registrations in GA4. The registration event fires both when a form is successfully submitted and when a submission attempt fails. By comparing a test registration with the record received, the team identifies the duplicate and adjusts the rule. Only then does it interpret the count again as evidence of completed registrations.

## How to apply or verify

Define events and parameters based on measurement questions, with marketing and implementation owners. Use the real-time reports or DebugView to check a known action and its data. Check for duplicates and mark as primary the event that represents the action important to the business. Document the period, filters, and consent conditions before comparing reports or attributing a change to a campaign.

## Important distinctions

Google Analytics differs from [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console), which describes presence and performance in Google Search. Search clicks, sessions, and events use distinct definitions and do not have to match. GA4 also differs from the former Universal Analytics. Collection blockers and privacy settings limit what can be observed; the absence of an event does not prove the action did not occur. A primary event is not automatically a sale either.
