# GEO

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

GEO stands for [Generative Engine](/en/resources/glossary/generative-engine) Optimization. It is the work of making relevant information about a brand more accessible, understandable, and verifiable to systems that generate AI-powered answers. It involves a brand’s own content, external references, technical accessibility, and monitoring answers, without direct control over what the system recommends.

## Why it matters for marketing

For a marketing team, the question is no longer only where a page ranks. It also matters whether the brand is included in comparisons, what attributes are assigned to it, and where the information came from. This perspective helps identify concrete problems: an outdated description, a weak source, or an important question left unanswered on the site.

## A practical example

A Brazilian software company notices that answers about tools for agencies mention competitors but do not explain how its product integrates with the system its audience uses. Possible actions include documenting the integration, publishing a verifiable example, and correcting outdated directory listings. Producing more generic articles about software would not necessarily address the observed gap.

## How to apply or verify it

Start with questions related to the buyer’s decision. Save answers and sources, check that the facts are correct, and turn each problem into an action with an owner. After publishing, monitor new data collection under comparable conditions. Tropk organizes analysis, evidence, and priorities throughout this cycle; a change in an answer alone does not prove that the action caused it.

## Important distinctions

[GEO and AEO](/en/resources/geo-and-aeo-guide) substantially overlap in how they are used in the market. GEO emphasizes generated answers; [AEO](/en/resources/glossary/aeo) emphasizes systems that provide answers. Neither replaces [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo). The study that popularized GEO evaluated a specific benchmark: its results are not a promise of gains for every brand, platform, or editorial intervention.
