# Generative features opt-out

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

A generative features opt-out is the choice to exclude content from certain AI experiences offered by an operator. On Google, the Search [generative AI](/en/resources/glossary/generative-ai) control in [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console) lets you exclude links and content from [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews), [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode), and Discover’s generative features, according to documentation reviewed in October 2026. Its scope is defined by that service.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the choice involves where a brand wants to distribute content and which experiences it may receive visits from. Excluding a property from the covered surfaces reduces its opportunities in those experiences, without being equivalent to removing the site from all of Search. The team needs to assess its editorial objective, the affected property, and the configuration’s scope before interpreting changes in exposure.

## Example in practice

Imagine a portal that wants to exclude only its reviews section from the generative experiences covered by Google’s control. When checking that section’s property in Search Console, the team would find the option to inherit the domain’s settings. It would decide to configure the exclusion for that child property and verify its scope, while preserving the inclusion decision for the other sections.

## How to apply or verify

An authorized owner can check the selection under Settings, in Search Console’s Search generative AI area. Check parent and child properties, any overrides to inherited settings, and the surfaces listed in the current help documentation. Record the change and monitor its propagation. The documentation allows a few days for the change to take effect, with possible [cache](/en/resources/glossary/cache) delays; a single observation does not confirm full application.

## Important distinctions

This control does not prevent all [crawling](/en/resources/glossary/crawling) or, by itself, change inclusion or ranking in other parts of Search. It also does not control training: the documentation points to [Google-Extended](/en/resources/glossary/google-extended) for that purpose. Services such as Merchant Center and Google Ads retain their own choices. Excluding presentation, restricting data collection, and limiting training are different decisions, and other operators may offer different controls.
