# Generative engine

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A generative engine combines [information retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) with models capable of producing an answer to a query. In the [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo) study’s formulation, the system retrieves documents and generates text grounded in those sources, with attribution. This is an architectural description of search: it is not simply any tool that produces text, images, or other AI-generated content.

## Why it matters for marketing

A page’s content may contribute to a synthesis alongside material from other websites. That is why marketing teams need to assess both whether a source is discovered and how its information appears in the answer. Being among the retrieved documents, receiving a visible [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), and being presented as a commercial alternative are distinct observations with different implications.

## Example in practice

A manufacturer publishes an industrial filter’s capacity under a specific pressure. A generative engine combines this specification sheet with an old distributor catalog and presents a capacity without the test condition. By opening the citations, the team identifies the mixing of contexts and prioritizes clarifying the specification and correcting the external catalog.

## How to apply or verify

Check whether the interface shows sources and whether they support the associated claims. Preserve the question, answer, URLs, and versions of the documents reviewed. When the system belongs to a third party, these records allow you to assess the observable result, but not reconstruct all internal processing. After updating a source, monitor new answers without automatically attributing the change to the intervention.

## Important distinctions

Generative engine is not synonymous with language model: the model is involved in generation, while the search experience may include retrieval, query reformulation, and other components. The architecture presented in the GEO study is a research formulation, not a mandatory specification for commercial products. Benchmark results also do not guarantee performance on another platform.
