# Generated query gap

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Generated query gap, called a search gap in this context, is the difference between the queries in an observed fan-out and the published content that answers them. The analysis starts with an identified set of searches branched out from questions. A query is uncovered when no page meets the response criterion defined for that analysis.

## Why it matters for marketing

This analysis helps the content team identify angles that a broad question may branch into and that the content library does not yet clarify. Google documents that [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) may perform related searches on subtopics. For marketing, the gap serves as a hypothesis for a [content brief](/en/resources/glossary/content-brief) or update, to be assessed against available evidence and usefulness.

## Example in practice

Imagine a language school analyzing queries observed after a question about evening classes. One of them asks about making up missed lessons, but the site only provides class times. Under the criterion that an answer must explain how make-up lessons work, this query is uncovered. The team confirms the current policy and adds the answer to the course page.

## How to apply or verify

Record the original question, system, date, and queries actually made available during collection. Link each query to the URLs reviewed and the passage that supports the answer. State how complete, partial, and missing answers are classified. If the fan-out is unavailable, record this limitation; query suggestions should not be presented as searches performed by the system in that interaction.

## Important distinctions

The gap refers to the set analyzed, not all market needs or the volume of questions people ask. It is also not the same as a lack of citations: a page may answer a query without being selected. Search gap is a contextual label; creating separate content for each query can duplicate answers without better serving the reader.
