# GA4 AI Assistants channel

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

The [GA4](/en/resources/glossary/google-analytics) [AI Assistants](/en/resources/glossary/ai-assistant) channel is an acquisition category that groups traffic identified as coming from assistants. In the current documentation, the label appears as AI Assistant, and the rule uses the medium ai-assistant. Analytics also assigns this medium when it recognizes a referral in a list of assistants. Classification depends on the information available and the service’s rules.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the channel lets you track identified visits without grouping all [AI traffic](/en/resources/glossary/ai-referral-traffic) into a generic category. Google excludes [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) from this category: organic visits from these surfaces belong to Organic Search. Comparing results requires checking the dimension’s scope, because first-user acquisition, session start, and event credit answer different questions.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency comparing sessions from assistants with organic search sessions for a school. If it adds AI Mode to the AI Assistant channel, it mixes categories from the default channel group. The team checks the current rule, keeps sessions in their corresponding categories, and separately notes the question about AI, without assuming the channel reveals all visits influenced by it.

## How to apply or verify

Check the source, medium, and dimension used in the report, as well as the date range and rule version. Investigate test links and incoming referrals before attributing an unexpected classification to an assistant. The default channel group cannot be edited; custom channel groups allow custom rules. Document these rules, and avoid comparing two different channel groups as if they were based on the same criteria.

## Important distinctions

A channel is a traffic classification, not a measure of mentions or recommendations in responses. Recognizing a referral does not recover visits without source signals or demonstrate a causal contribution to sales. The list and rules may change. Source, medium, channel, and event attribution values serve different purposes and must remain clearly identified when presenting results to the team.
