# Frontier model

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A frontier model refers to a general-purpose model whose capabilities are near the state of the art at a given time. The frontier shifts as new systems and evaluations emerge. The Frontier Model Forum uses its own definition for organizational membership, based on comparison with widely used models; this institutional criterion is not a universal classification.

## Why it matters for marketing

The label appears in vendor communications, but on its own it does not answer whether a tool meets the team’s needs. Advanced capabilities in programming or reasoning may not preserve the tone of voice in Portuguese. When purchasing, turn the frontier claim into questions about the evaluated task, comparison benchmark, version, and usage conditions offered.

## Example in practice

Imagine a consultancy choosing a model to review copy for regional campaigns. One vendor presents a version as a frontier model and shows programming results; another demonstrates its ability to resolve ambiguities in Brazilian Portuguese copy. The consultancy records that the first vendor’s evidence measures a different task and requests the same editorial test before justifying the choice for this project.

## How to apply or verify

Ask for the vendor’s definition, the comparison date, and the results supporting the label. Confirm that the version available in the application is the one that was evaluated. Conduct your own evaluation using representative materials, considering errors, cost, and response time. Keep a record so you can reassess the decision when the model or the team’s needs change.

## Important distinctions

A [foundation model](/en/resources/glossary/foundation-model) indicates an adaptable base; a frontier model indicates a relative position in terms of capability. A system can belong to both categories, but the terms are not equivalent. Frontier also does not mean general intelligence, absence of flaws, or leadership in every task. The Frontier Model Forum’s definition serves the organization’s stated scope and may differ from other uses.
