# Featured snippet

## What it means

A featured snippet is a special box in Google Search where the descriptive excerpt appears before the result link, reversing the conventional order. It highlights information extracted from a page to address the query. Google's systems determine the selection; site owners cannot mark an excerpt as a featured snippet or guarantee its appearance for a particular search.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this placement calls for checking whether the extracted information answers the question and preserves the page's meaning. Incomplete guidance can seem definitive when viewed out of context. Organizing clear content helps readers, but does not create an entitlement to the featured placement. The team should check the query, the displayed excerpt, and the corresponding information in the material.

## Example in practice

Imagine a maintenance company whose featured excerpt shows only the first step of an electrical inspection, omitting the condition that the equipment must be switched off. The team revises the page to keep the condition and guidance close together and checks the published content. This corrects the safety information in the same procedure without promising that Google will immediately replace the selected excerpt.

## How to apply or verify

Compare the displayed answer with the page and check applicable presentation controls. [nosnippet](/en/resources/glossary/nosnippet) prevents excerpts, while data-nosnippet excludes marked text. Reducing [max-snippet](/en/resources/glossary/max-snippet) may lower the chance of a featured snippet, but Google provides no fixed minimum limit and does not guarantee removal with a low value. Assess the intended effects and other affected presentations before changing rules.

## Important distinctions

A featured snippet is distinct from [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews), a generated answer, and a standard result description. It can also appear in groups of related questions, according to the documentation. Clicking the featured snippet can lead to the corresponding section when the technology and excerpt identification allow it. Display, click, and visit remain different metrics; the featured snippet does not prove a commercial recommendation or a conversion.
