# Entity salience

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

[Entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity) salience describes how central an entity is in the analyzed content, according to a defined method and context. In the REST v1 version of the Google Cloud Natural Language API, the salience field represents the importance of an entity in the document as a whole, on a scale from zero to one. This implementation does not provide a universal brand score.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the concept helps distinguish an article focused on a product from a page that merely mentions it. This guides the assessment of what the content actually develops. If a tool reports salience, the team should check which text was analyzed and how the measure was produced before comparing pages or time periods.

## Example in practice

Imagine an article explaining a credit union’s billing system and mentioning a bank only as a payment example. When assessing the editorial focus, the team sees that the credit union’s rules drive the text, while the bank appears in a passing observation. It keeps the bank as a secondary reference, avoiding classifying it as the main subject.

## How to apply or verify

Define the document being analyzed and preserve its version, language, and length. If using the Google Cloud API, check the salience field for the identified entity and its associated mentions. Compare the results with your reading of the text: does the entity contribute to the central explanation? Record the tool used and investigate differences between the editorial interpretation and the extraction.

## Important distinctions

Salience is not equivalent to the number of mentions: repetition can coexist with a secondary role. It also differs from sentiment, popularity, recommendation, and search ranking. A high value in the API cited describes centrality in that document; it does not demonstrate commercial preference or importance across all topics. Different methods may produce measures that are not directly comparable.
