# Entity disambiguation

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

[Entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity) disambiguation is identifying which person, organization, product, or place an expression refers to when there is more than one plausible candidate. The name may be identical, abbreviated, or similar. The process uses context and attributes, such as an official domain, location, activity, and identifiers, to distinguish the entities and link information to the right candidate.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this distinction makes it possible to investigate descriptions attributed to the wrong company and guide corrections at the source. A short name can refer to businesses in different sectors. The team needs to show what sets its organization apart on relevant pages and listings, without adding false information or assuming that a longer description will resolve every incorrect association.

## Example in practice

Imagine two organizations called Horizonte: a publisher in Recife and a clinic in Curitiba. An answer about the publisher gives the clinic’s phone number. The team compares the domains, activities, and addresses in the cited sources, identifies the mix-up, and corrects a publisher listing that had no category, recording the correct reference for its contact information.

## How to apply or verify

List the candidates that share the name and compare the attributes used in the answer or listing. Verify each link against an identifiable source. In structured markup, keep identity references consistent: [sameAs](/en/resources/glossary/sameas) should indicate the same entity, not a namesake. Then repeat the query under recorded conditions to see whether the association still occurs.

## Important distinctions

Disambiguation is not about choosing the most popular brand or eliminating legitimate name variations. It distinguishes identities; name resolution may also bring together mentions of the same identity. Google documents Organization properties that help with this task, but this does not guarantee immediate correction in other systems, inclusion in results, or updates to a model’s parameters.
