# Entity confusion

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

[Entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity) confusion is the observed mixing of information belonging to different identities, or to different versions and periods of a business. It can occur when a response attributes a namesake’s product, another company’s address, or an old offer to the current brand. Diagnosis depends on comparing each attribution with reliable references.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, counting a name’s presence without checking the facts can conceal problems with how an offer is described. A response with the right brand and the wrong contact does not represent useful exposure for that contact. Before deciding whether to update their own materials or request external corrections, the team needs to distinguish identification, factual accuracy, and commercial relevance.

## A practical example

Imagine a booking platform called Porto Agenda that discontinued its restaurant version and shifted to serving salons. A response recommends the product for table reservations, citing an old page that is still accessible. The team confirms the period when that offer was available and decides to update the page with the product’s history and current scope.

## How to apply or verify

Save the question, the full response, the date, and the sources shown. Identify the mixed-up attribute and compare the product, organization, and time period against current and historical references. In the example, check the documentation for the restaurant version before changing the old page. Repeat the observation after the correction, without assuming every system has received the change.

## Important distinctions

Entity confusion is not just any factual error: an incorrectly entered price can occur without an identity mix-up. Nor is it positive exposure just because the name appeared. The severity depends on the attribute and the decision affected; the cost must be assessed in the observed case. Correcting one source does not guarantee that every response will be corrected immediately.
