# Entity

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An entity is something identifiable about which information is stated: a person, organization, product, place, or concept. In search and content analysis, the term helps distinguish the subject from the name used to describe it. A company may have several names, and the same name may identify different companies. Context and relationships help distinguish these cases.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this distinction matters for brand recognition and metric accuracy. An abbreviation may match a common word; a product may share its name with the company. Consistent information about the official domain, category, location, and owner reduces confusion for readers and systems, without guaranteeing that every search engine will resolve the identity correctly.

## Practical example

Two organizations are called Aurora: one sells software and the other works in the food industry. Monitoring that counts every mention of “Aurora” may mix them up. A response about software should be checked against the context, domain, and description. Creating a list of recognized names is useful, but real responses still need to be reviewed for ambiguity.

## How to apply or verify

Maintain the primary name, legitimate variants, and relationships between the organization and its products. Check for consistency across the website, documentation, official profiles, and relevant external records. When using [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data), describe true facts and consistent identifiers. When measuring, review namesakes and record identification decisions so that a rule correction does not appear to be increased visibility.

## Important distinctions

An entity is not a keyword and does not automatically correspond to a [knowledge panel](/en/resources/glossary/knowledge-panel). Marking up Organization on a website also does not create an entity recognized by every platform. Consistent information supports understanding and verification; whether it appears in a response still depends on relevance, sources, and how the product being researched works.
