# Earned citation

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An earned [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) is a reference in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) to third-party coverage of a brand, rather than content editorially controlled by the company itself. The term earned citation aligns this classification with earned media in communications. To use it accurately, identify the publisher and check whether the page reflects external reporting or evaluation.

## Why it matters for marketing

This distinction helps marketing and public relations teams recognize which information depends on other publishers. A cited report may warrant investigation into how the product was presented and what evidence the publisher used. The team should not treat the classification as proof of praise or commercial value: critical coverage may also be referenced in a response.

## Example in practice

Imagine a coffee maker manufacturer mentioned in a response that references a magazine’s test. The analyst opens the article, checks the author, and finds temperature measurements conducted by the publication. They record the citation as external coverage and use the test criteria to prepare technical clarifications, without presenting the article’s inclusion as an endorsement by the magazine.

## How to apply or verify

Check the cited URL, byline, publisher identification, and the origin of the claims. Look for notices of sponsorship, republication, or material supplied by the company. When editorial independence cannot be verified, record the limitation and separate the case in the report. An external domain alone does not reveal who wrote the text or who decided to publish it.

## Important distinctions

Earned citations and owned sources are distinguished by editorial control and origin, not by page quality. Providers’ categories vary: the Profound study includes institutions and press release distribution under earned, which calls for caution when interpreting independence. An external citation is not automatically a [backlink](/en/resources/glossary/backlink) to the brand, an endorsement, factual confirmation, or a result caused by a PR effort.
