# Digital PR for AI

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Digital PR for AI involves earning relevant editorial coverage and tracking how information about an organization appears in AI system responses. The team offers story ideas, data and experts to independent publications. As part of this strategic focus, it also researches which sources appear in responses about the topic, without controlling the selection of those sources.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the concept helps teams choose outlets based on relevance to the topic and audience, as well as monitor their presence in responses. An earned mention can exist without a link, while a reference may point to another organization. Separating these records prevents teams from presenting the number of articles as proof of a brand recommendation or influence over models.

## Example in practice

Imagine a packaging manufacturer sharing research on the disposal of refill packs. An environmental publication runs a story covering the methodology, limitations and an interview. The team records the editorial coverage and checks questions about disposal in an AI service. If the story does not appear in the visible sources, the team keeps the coverage recorded without counting a [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) that did not occur.

## How to apply or verify

Organize the questions, service consulted and dates before comparing responses. For each story, save the URL, author, information attributed to the company and editorial independence. In the observed response, check for the mention, link and related passage. Communications is responsible for the story pitch and data accuracy; analysis records what actually appeared in that data collection.

## Important distinctions

Editorial coverage is an external publication; a mention is the presence of a name; a citation is an identifiable reference in a response. None of these alone reveals a change in a model’s training. PR also involves trust and relationships with people. A publication’s prior presence among the sources does not guarantee that a new story will be selected or cited.
