# Depth topic

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A depth topic is a monitoring segment dedicated to a specific opportunity within a category. The term Depth topic appears in Profound’s topic organization and brings together questions linked to a priority audience, need, or condition. The segment defines how responses are analyzed together, rather than simply making each question more extensive.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this grouping makes it possible to investigate a business priority without diluting it with questions about the entire offering. A company may need to understand how it is presented to a particular segment with different purchasing criteria. Separating this segment helps connect findings to relevant materials and stakeholders before deciding which content merits revision or further planning.

## Example in practice

Imagine a lighting manufacturer interested in projects for small museums. It creates a topic with questions about preserving exhibits, adjusting light, and installing lighting in existing rooms. The responses highlight intensity control but barely explain installation. The team examines this gap and decides to prepare installation documentation suited to the segment under investigation.

## How to apply or verify

Describe the opportunity and what falls outside it. Check whether the questions share an audience, selection criteria, and a decision the team intends to support. Review individual results before aggregating them, and record the topic’s members for each period. If incompatible needs arise, consider separating them to preserve the interpretation of the monitored set.

## Important distinctions

A broad category topic provides an overview; a depth topic focuses on a defined opportunity. Naming and organization vary by provider, and the source lesson warns that it is outdated. There is no universal number of topics or [prompts](/en/resources/glossary/prompt). A long sentence is not, by itself, a depth topic, nor does grouping guarantee that the brand will be recommended.
