# Crawl budget

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Crawl budget describes the relationship between a search engine's access capacity and [crawling](/en/resources/glossary/crawling) demand for a site. For Google, it involves how much the system can crawl without overloading the server and how much it considers necessary to crawl. It is not a number of credits a site owner can buy or a single target that applies to every site.

## Why it matters for marketing

The topic deserves attention especially for very large collections of pages or sites that change frequently. For marketing a small site, fixing access, quality, and [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) is usually more relevant than attributing every omission to crawl budget. Investigating it becomes more valuable when there are concrete signs that important pages are revisited infrequently, there are too many variants, or crawl requests are being wasted.

## Example in practice

An e-commerce site generates countless filter combinations that repeat products and create URLs with no search value. The [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) may find a large number of variants while relevant products change. In this context, reviewing the filter architecture and how pages are discovered is different from a blog with forty articles that have not yet been indexed.

## How to apply or check

Examine the site's size, update frequency, logs, and crawl reports. Identify errors, slow responses, redirect chains, and groups of low-value URLs. Prioritize fixes that preserve useful pages. Consistent sitemaps and a clear architecture help present the collection of pages, but they do not guarantee how often each URL will be visited.

## Important distinctions

Crawl budget is not indexing, ranking, or an AI model's capacity. Increasing access also does not make duplicate content valuable. Avoid indiscriminately reducing the site to “save crawl budget”: decisions should consider intent, demand, and navigation. For each recommendation, report the observed symptom and the affected group instead of invoking crawl budget as a generic explanation.
