# Core Web Vitals

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Core Web Vitals are Google metrics focused on the real-world experience of using web pages. The current set includes [LCP](/en/resources/glossary/lcp-largest-contentful-paint), for loading the largest visible content; [INP](/en/resources/glossary/inp-interaction-to-next-paint), for response to interactions; and [CLS](/en/resources/glossary/cls-cumulative-layout-shift), for visual stability. Each metric observes a specific dimension. The set alone does not summarize a site's quality, accessibility, or usefulness.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), these metrics help turn complaints about slowness or elements shifting position into issues that can be investigated. A campaign may bring visitors to a page where content takes too long to appear or a button responds late. Identifying the affected dimension helps guide requests to the development team, rather than treating every user experience issue as a need to reduce image sizes.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store that loads quickly, but its filters freeze when shoppers select a size and color. The report shows good LCP and poor INP on mobile. The team prioritizes investigating how these interactions are processed, rather than concluding that the page is fixed because it loads quickly. After the fix, it tracks comparable data and checks whether the observed issue has decreased.

## How to apply or verify

Read field data with the period, device, and coverage stated. web.dev recommends evaluating the 75th percentile: LCP of up to 2.5 seconds, INP of up to 200 milliseconds, and CLS of up to 0.1. Compare lab tests to diagnose causes, keeping their conditions documented. If there is not enough data, report that absence rather than assuming a pass or failure.

## Important distinctions

Core Web Vitals differ from the overall Lighthouse score and supporting metrics such as [FCP](/en/resources/glossary/fcp-first-contentful-paint), [TTFB](/en/resources/glossary/ttfb-time-to-first-byte), and [TBT](/en/resources/glossary/tbt-total-blocking-time). A lab run does not automatically represent real visitors. Google considers these signals in its ranking systems alongside other factors; achieving good values does not guarantee rankings. Technical experience, page relevance, and business outcomes require separate evaluations.
