# Core update

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

A core update is a significant, broad change to Google Search's ranking systems. These updates reassess the overall set of results and are not intended to penalize a specific page or website. A drop around the implementation period may warrant investigation, but the timing alone does not automatically identify the reason for the change or indicate a violation.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, understanding this scope helps avoid hasty changes to content that remains useful. A change in position may coincide with competitors, demand, or technical issues. It also does not demonstrate an equivalent drop in [AI citations](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). Rankings and visibility as a source need to be monitored using their own metrics, queries, and comparable periods before attributing an effect to the update.

## Example in practice

Imagine a cooperative that sees fewer clicks on financing pages during a rollout. During the same period, demand in its category falls, and one page starts redirecting incorrectly. The team checks that the update is complete, reviews data by page, and fixes the confirmed redirect. It continues investigating the rest without labeling the entire drop a core update penalty.

## How to apply or verify

Check the official dashboard for the rollout's start and end. Google recommends waiting at least a week after it ends to analyze the comparison in [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console). Review pages, queries, and search types separately, and keep the same segments. Evaluate content and confirmed issues before applying a solution; removing elements based on rumors does not replace an analysis of what changed.

## Important distinctions

A core update is distinct from a manual action, a page update, and a change in a third-party metric. There is no guaranteed timeline for ranking recovery, and improvements may be reflected at different times. The update does not reveal the systems' internal weights or explain every [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). Record what you observe, the changes you make, and what still has no demonstrated cause.
