# Content updates

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A content update is a review of a publication to keep its facts, examples, links, and guidance relevant to the need it addresses. It may involve correcting, expanding, or removing information. The work should have an identifiable reason, such as a product change or new evidence. Changing only the displayed date does not demonstrate that a substantive editorial review took place.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, older content may continue to appear in searches, references, and decisions. A page about discontinued plans or an integration that has changed may create the wrong expectations. Reviewing existing content lets you make use of material that already has an audience and links, when it remains relevant, instead of creating a new URL for every adjustment.

## Practical example

A comparison says that a platform does not offer data export. The feature is now available, and the team has verifiable documentation. The update should correct the criterion, review the affected conclusion, and identify the sources consulted. Changing the year in the title while leaving the text unchanged does not fix the information that influences a buyer’s choice.

## How to apply or verify

Assign an owner and set review triggers for information that is sensitive to change. Check sources, URL availability, examples, and consistency with other pages. Document what changed and retain the original publication date when appropriate. Update technical dates, such as lastmod, only when accurate. Then check the public version and monitor new readership without promising immediate adoption by systems.

## Important distinctions

Updating is not a ranking formula based on frequency. Stable content does not need to be artificially rewritten every month. In [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search), recent sources may be relevant, but recency does not replace accuracy or usefulness. The criterion is whether the facts address the question; “updated” should reflect the work performed, not serve as a generic trust badge.
