# Content gap

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A content gap is the distance between information an audience needs and the answer available in the existing content. It may be a missing page, a missing key passage, insufficient evidence, or outdated information. The assessment needs to specify who needs to know what and why the current material does not adequately meet that need.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this helps prevent turning every absence of a brand into a commission for an article. Sometimes the information already exists but is difficult to find or inaccessible. In other cases, a competitor’s page better addresses a purchase criterion. The right action depends on the observed cause: update, reorganize, fix access, or create a new piece of content.

## Example in practice

Answers about platforms for agencies mention collaboration limitations, but the company’s website does not explain how teams work on projects. That is a specific content gap. A new article called “the future of AI” would not solve the problem. A section covering workflows, conditions, and collaboration examples in the documentation or on the appropriate page may be more useful.

## How to apply or verify

Compare real questions, AI answers, sources, and existing pages. Record the need, the material that already answers part of it, the missing evidence, and the editorial decision. Also check search data and customer inquiries. Before creating a new URL, ask whether the answer fits coherently on a published page that already serves the same intent.

## Important distinctions

A content gap is not synonymous with a keyword a competitor uses. Nor does it prove cannibalization when two pages cover related topics. A definition and a guide can coexist if they offer different outcomes. The criterion is usefulness and coverage, with clear links between content—not filling a list of terms with nearly identical publications.
