# Content freshness

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Content freshness is how well information fits the question it needs to answer at a given time. It involves when the information was published or revised and, most importantly, whether the facts and conditions are still valid. Content about prices, availability, and versions may require frequent review. Explanations of stable concepts can remain useful for years, provided they retain accuracy and context.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, assessing freshness helps prioritize pages whose aging could undermine decisions. A buyer may be misled by a commercial term that has changed, even when the article appears recent. The team should identify time-sensitive information, assign review owners, and recognize which changes require an update before continuing to promote the content.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school network maintaining a page about course enrollment. The official calendar now lists a different deadline, while the article retains the previous one. The team could compare the documents and correct the information applicants rely on. Changing only the date at the top would leave the problem untouched: the enrollment deadline would still be incorrect.

## How to apply or verify

List the facts that may change and compare them with current sources. On the course page, check the deadline against the official calendar and also revise any passages that depend on it. Record what changed and when it was checked. Distinguish initial publication from a substantive update. After editing, check the visible text and the date information shown on the page.

## Important distinctions

Google describes freshness systems for queries that warrant recent information; this does not mean a universal preference for new pages. Its guidance also advises against changing dates without substantially changing the content. Freshness is a condition of the information, while updating is an editorial action. Reviewing the page does not prove recrawling by search engines, a change in model training, or immediate [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation).
