# Content fidelity

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Content fidelity is the correspondence between the meaning of a source used and what an answer claims based on it. It includes preserving relevant numbers, units, conditions and limitations, even when the wording changes. A cited URL does not guarantee this correspondence: the system may link the reference to a claim the material does not support or alter its scope.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, checking fidelity helps prevent treating any [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) as an accurate representation of a study or offer. A percentage may lose its baseline, a capacity may change units, or a qualified conclusion may seem general. The team should compare claims with the relevant passages, distinguishing what the source actually reports from what the answer adds when summarizing the topic.

## Example in practice

Imagine a solar panel manufacturer whose product sheet states a power rating of 450 watts, but the cited answer says 450 volts. The team opens the same product sheet, checks the unit and condition, and records the discrepancy in the answer passage. It prioritizes clarifying the specification and monitors new queries, without treating the presence of the link as proof that the data was preserved.

## How to apply or verify

Break the answer into verifiable claims and locate the support for each one in the content used. Check units, population, date and caveats. Document omissions that change the meaning, as well as explicit contradictions. Tools such as Ragas assess support based on retrieved context, but their results depend on the method; a broader editorial review needs to state its own criteria and limitations.

## Important distinctions

Fidelity to the context does not show that the context is true or current. An answer may accurately reproduce a wrong source, requiring additional fact-checking. Paraphrasing does not necessarily reduce fidelity, and matching words does not ensure that meaning is preserved. Citation, consistency with the source and accuracy in the real world are different questions and should remain separate in evaluation.
