# Content extractability

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Content extractability is the ability to identify and extract useful passages from material a system can process, while preserving the information needed to interpret them. In editorial work, this involves text, structure, and local context: subject, attribute, unit, and condition. An isolated passage should retain its meaning even when separated from the rest of the page.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, extractability helps assess whether a specification or comparison remains clear outside the page’s full design. Tables without recoverable headers and numbers separated from their units can produce incomplete fragments. Editorial review needs to keep pace with technical review: providing extractable text does not mean the system correctly understood the information or decided to use it.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store that publishes a washing machine’s capacity in a table. When a row is extracted, the team gets “eight kilograms” but loses the model name and the note “dry clothes.” It decides to put the model, capacity, and condition in the same text passage and repeat the extraction, checking whether the specification remains complete outside the table.

## How to apply or check

Compare the visible content with the text received and extracted by the client you selected. Check reading order, [headings](/en/resources/glossary/headings-html-section-titles), units, caveats, and pronoun references. For pages with JavaScript, also examine the rendered [HTML](/en/resources/glossary/html-the-web-s-markup-language) when the client offers this feature. Record the URL, version, and tool: the ability to run scripts or interpret images varies between clients and configurations.

## Important distinctions

Extractability differs from access, [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval), understanding, and [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). An accessible page may provide little useful text; a correctly extracted passage may never appear in a response. Google recommends making important content available as text and documents its JavaScript processing, but this documentation does not describe all agents. Clear structure makes inspection easier, without guaranteeing selection or correct use.
