# Content brief

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A content brief is a document that guides the production of an editorial piece. It defines who will read it, what need it will address, what information needs to be researched, and what the reader should be able to do afterward. It also sets out the format, sources, review, and next steps. A good brief clarifies the task without replacing the research and judgment of the writer.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) teams, it connects an observed opportunity to actionable work. A gap in [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) can lead to a page update, comparison, or documentation, with clear acceptance criteria. This connection prevents teams from asking for “an article about [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo)” when the real problem is a specific hiring question or incorrect product information.

## Example in practice

The team finds that buyers do not understand how to separate customers in a tool. The brief defines the agency audience, the question about organization, confirmed product facts, and an example to validate. It specifies that the piece should explain conditions and limitations. This lets reviewers assess whether the material solved the problem, in addition to checking spelling and length.

## How to apply or verify

Include the intent, destination in the content library, evidence, examples, claims that need checking, and the person responsible for review. Before production, check whether there is already a suitable page to update. During writing, allow the structure to change if research shows that it needs to. For approval, compare the piece with the expected deliverable and validate links, facts, and public functionality.

## Important distinctions

A brief is not just a list of keywords, [headings](/en/resources/glossary/headings-html-section-titles), or word count. Nor is it a [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) to invent numbers, experiences, or testimonials. AI assistance can help organize material and suggest versions, but authorship, research, and review still need responsible owners. The document should make these responsibilities clear, without presenting an AI-generated draft as evidence.
