# Competitive overlap

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Competitive overlap measures the coexistence of a brand and a competitor in [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). The team counts responses containing both and states the basis used: all valid responses, those containing the focal brand, or another defined set. Name recognition and deduplication must follow an explicit rule, since each response may repeat the same brands.

## Why it matters for marketing

The metric helps marketing teams identify which brand pairs appear together in monitored questions. This can guide the analysis of comparisons and the review of attributes used to differentiate them. A brand from another category may coexist as an example or reference, so the identified pair needs to be interpreted before it is included in competitive analysis materials.

## Example in practice

In a hypothetical collection of 60 responses about meal delivery, a platform appears alongside a benefits app in nine texts. The rule counts each response once, resulting in 15% of the valid set. On reading the excerpts, the agency sees that the app is mentioned as a payment method and decides to separate partners from direct competitors.

## How to apply or verify

Define the pairs, normalize name variations, and check for namesakes. State whether bibliographic references count as presence or whether the analysis uses only the main text. Preserve examples of coexistence and absence. When comparing periods, keep questions and platforms equivalent and report failures separately. For a set conditioned on the focal brand, also provide its absolute size.

## Important distinctions

Coexistence does not demonstrate preference, recommendation, explicit comparison, or actual competition for a purchase. The rate across all responses is symmetrical for a pair; sets conditioned on each brand may produce different percentages. Overlap also differs from share of mentions: repeating a name several times does not increase the count of responses in which the pair coexisted.
