# Comparative prompt

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A comparative [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) is a request to compare two or more alternatives based on identifiable criteria. The user can name products, services, or approaches and ask about differences, advantages, or suitability for a particular situation. The expected result is a comparison that helps evaluate choices, with equivalent conditions and evidence for each alternative, rather than a list without criteria.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this request reveals which differences need to be documented so an offer can be evaluated accurately. Price, limitations, compatibility, and customer service can each carry different weight. The team can prioritize comparisons that clarify these factors, including genuine disadvantages, and review claims that treat different versions of a product as equivalent.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school comparing two enrollment systems for six campuses. It asks about differences in data exports and per-student charges. The response compares one provider’s basic plan with the other’s advanced plan. After noticing this mismatch, the team requests a new table comparing equivalent plans before using the comparison to make its selection.

## How to apply or verify

To verify, record the alternatives, criteria, and conditions of use in the prompt. Check each difference against the relevant sources, noting the version, plan, and date when relevant. For your own content, explain how the comparison was made and which factors support the conclusion. Google’s guidance on reviews recommends providing evidence and addressing aspects that matter to the decision.

## Important distinctions

A comparative prompt can have a commercial purpose, but it can also compare methods without any intention to buy. It does not require choosing a winner: showing the conditions under which each alternative works better may be enough. An [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) does not replace evidence from actual use. A favorable position in the text does not demonstrate market share or proven product superiority.
