# Co-citation

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Co-[citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) describes two brands or sources appearing together in the same unit of analysis. In Profound's commercial [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search) glossary, this unit is usually the response to a [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt). The report must state whether it considers brands mentioned in the text, referenced pages, or domains, because these objects produce different pairs and counts.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, looking at pairs helps investigate which brands appear alongside one another on a given topic. This view may reveal a comparison set different from the one used in commercial planning. Before revisiting positioning, the team should examine the context: competitors, suppliers, and complementary examples may appear in the same answer without competing for the same need.

## Example in practice

Imagine a report on scheduling tools that finds references to pages from two providers in eight responses. The analyst opens those responses and sees that one tool serves clinics, while the other serves salons. She keeps the pair in the source log but splits the analysis by segment to avoid an inappropriate commercial comparison.

## How to apply or verify

First define what is being counted and the unit's scope: a full response, passage, or document. Record the prompt, platform, date, and corresponding references. When counting pages cited together, confirm both links appear in the same response and remove duplicates according to the stated rule. Do not combine sources from different responses to create an observed pair.

## Important distinctions

Source co-citation requires references to share the defined unit; textual [co-occurrence](/en/resources/glossary/co-occurrence) requires only that terms appear together in that unit. A tool may use co-citation for named brands, so the operational definition should accompany the metric. Repeated pairs do not demonstrate that the model has learned about competitors, mutual endorsement, automatic authority, or a causal relationship between sources.
