# Claude-User

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Claude](/en/resources/glossary/claude)-User is Anthropic's agent that can access pages when someone asks Claude a question. Its role is to retrieve content to fulfill the request, distinct from collecting data for model development. The documentation consulted in October 2026 lets site owners control this access and states that the bots respect [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt).

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the decision is whether to allow public information to be accessed during a conversation in Claude. A policy intended to restrict training may also block this [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) if it treats all Anthropic bots as the same. The team needs to specify the intended purpose to the person responsible for the site, rather than request an indiscriminate block.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school that publishes its scholarship rules and allows queries through Claude, but restricts [ClaudeBot](/en/resources/glossary/claudebot). While reviewing robots.txt, the agency also finds a prohibition on Claude-User in the subdomain hosting the rules. It asks for that specific rule to be corrected and then checks a query, preserving the separate decision about collecting data for model training.

## How to apply or verify

Check the Claude-User group in robots.txt for each relevant subdomain. Ask the infrastructure team for URL, timestamp, HTTP response, and request origin logs; Anthropic publishes a list of IPs for identification. A controlled query can help observe retrieval, but changing only the [User-Agent header](/en/resources/glossary/user-agent) does not prove an authentic visit.

## Important distinctions

Claude-User is not the same as ClaudeBot or [Claude-SearchBot](/en/resources/glossary/claude-searchbot): the three have distinct documented purposes. The fact that a user made a request does not justify assuming an exception to Anthropic's robots.txt, unlike the behavior declared by other operators. Allowing access also does not guarantee [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), recommendation, or inclusion in every Claude response. A recorded visit does not identify material used in training.
