# Claude-SearchBot

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Claude](/en/resources/glossary/claude)-SearchBot is Anthropic’s [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler), which browses the web and analyzes content to improve the relevance and accuracy of search responses. The documentation states that disabling it prevents content from being indexed for this purpose. Its role is distinct from data collection that may be used for training by [ClaudeBot](/en/resources/glossary/claudebot) and visits requested by users with [Claude-User](/en/resources/glossary/claude-user).

## Why it matters for marketing

For a content team, this agent deserves attention when the goal is to keep public information available to Claude search. Decisions about training do not address this need. Before attributing outdated information solely to the text, it is worth checking whether the search crawler can access the current version on the domain where it was published.

## Example in practice

Suppose a college updates its admissions page but keeps a rule that blocks Claude-SearchBot on its courses subdomain. The team finds this rule while investigating responses with outdated deadlines and requests that it be reviewed. It then monitors new visits to the updated page, without claiming that allowing the agent will automatically fix all responses.

## How to apply or check

Check the [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt) file for each relevant subdomain and request logs for the relevant paths. Anthropic says its bots respect these directives and publishes a list of IP addresses to verify their origin. Compare the declared agent, IP address, date, and content delivered; a simulation using only the agent name does not confirm a real visit from the company.

## Important distinctions

[Indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) for search is not training, and a Claude-SearchBot visit does not prove [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) or ranking in results. Anthropic says blocking it may reduce visibility and accuracy in searches; it does not promise the reverse effect if it is allowed. Claude-User provides another form of access, initiated by people. A rule for one agent does not replace the policy set for the others.
