## What it means

Claude is Anthropic’s [AI assistant](/en/resources/glossary/ai-assistant), used to chat and work with information, files, and tasks. Web search is a documented capability: when used, it retrieves online content to support answers with references. The name Claude also identifies models; the user-facing product and an integration that uses these models need to be distinguished.

## Why it matters for marketing

For content and marketing, external research and analysis of supplied materials require different criteria. A team can request a review of a file without consulting the web, or research recent information using online sources. Identifying which context supported the answer helps determine whether a claim needs current documentation, editorial correction, or confirmation from the person responsible for the information.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency using Claude on a Team account to update a course page. The response reuses a course duration from the supplied file and does not show web research. When checking the organization’s capabilities, the editor finds that search is disabled. They request that it be enabled and check the course duration on the official page before revising the text.

## How to apply or verify

Check the available settings and look for signs of research and the references provided. For Team or Enterprise accounts, the documentation requires organization-level search enablement; the interface may vary. Ask for current sources, check dates, and compare each claim with the corresponding document. Separately record content received as a file, a page retrieved by URL, and information found through search.

## Important distinctions

Using Claude does not mean every answer has searched the internet. Documentation reviewed in October 2026 describes both interfaces with a search control and a new experience that searches when needed. Citations make review easier, but do not prove currency or accuracy. Assistant features should also not be assumed in an API model call.
