# Citation velocity

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) velocity is a term used to track how references to a source change over time. The measure depends on the definition used: the numerator may count occurrences, responses with a citation, or newly cited pages. To interpret it, specify the time period, unit, and observed base. The term alone does not provide a formula that can be compared across tracking tools.

## Why it matters for marketing

Marketing teams can use this view to track a page after an update or investigate a change in cited sources. Its usefulness depends on comparable conditions. A higher total may result from more questions or more runs, not from a greater share of responses citing the source. Investment decisions need to account for this difference before interpreting the trend.

## Example in practice

Imagine a distributor tracking its installation manual across one hundred valid responses per week. The manual appears in ten responses in the first week and fifteen in the second. The team records five additional responses with a citation between the weeks and compares rates of 10% and 15%. If the second base had two hundred responses, the same total of fifteen would require a different interpretation.

## How to apply or verify it

Choose the numerator unit and interval—for example, the weekly difference in the number of responses citing a URL. Save the valid response base for each period, the questions, and the deduplication rule. Keep platforms and conditions equivalent, record sample changes, and separate failures. Confirm whether the report measures change or simply accumulates all occurrences.

## Important distinctions

Repeating a collection and adding up citations increases the recorded cumulative total, but does not prove that the source's presence has grown. Citation velocity also differs from [citation rate](/en/resources/glossary/citation-rate), which measures the proportion of responses with a reference in the stated base. Changing the unit from domain to page changes the measure. None of these measures, on its own, demonstrates traffic, model preference, or the causal effect of an editorial action.
