# Citation source chain

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) source chain is the observed set of domains and publication types cited by an AI platform when answering questions on a given topic, organized by frequency or another stated criterion. The term describes a map of the information supply visible in responses. It does not reveal all the pages consulted or the complete internal path to the answer.

## Why it matters for marketing

This map helps marketing teams decide where to investigate the presence and quality of information in a sector. A topic may bring together manufacturer documentation, specialist publications, and forums in different proportions. Knowing which sources are actually cited helps avoid choosing channels solely for their general reputation, but does not guarantee that a future publication on those channels will be retrieved or recommended.

## Example in practice

Suppose an equipment distributor analyzes twenty answers about compressor maintenance. On platform A, manufacturer manuals account for most of the references; on B, technical portals appear most often. The team opens the pages, confirms their classification, and separates the two maps. It decides to review its manuals and investigate the relevant portals, without treating the collection as a universal industry ranking.

## How to apply or verify

Collect questions, valid answers, URLs, and dates for each platform, language, and topic. Normalize domains without losing page-level detail, and state whether frequency counts citations or answers that include a citation. Sort the inventory using the chosen unit and check samples manually. To compare periods, keep the same parameters and record unavailable sources or categories that have not yet been classified.

## Important distinctions

The observed chain differs from the genealogy of information, which traces its origin and republications. A frequently [cited domain](/en/resources/glossary/cited-domain) is not necessarily trustworthy or influential on sales. Profound's research on citation composition is observational and depends on its sample. It supports investigating differences between engines and sectors, without demonstrating the reasons behind each source choice.
