# Citation share

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) share is the proportion of total citations attributed to a page, domain, or specified group. The numerator includes occurrences for that target; the denominator includes all eligible occurrences in the same set of responses. The result is a percentage. Profound documentation supports views by domain, page, and category.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this measure helps examine the concentration of references: which properties appear repeatedly and which pages support that presence. A higher share may be associated with a few highly recurrent URLs. Before expanding content topics, the team needs to distinguish repetition from diversity and check whether the references cover a subject relevant to its offering.

## Practical example

Imagine a tile manufacturer tracking questions about cleaning porcelain tile. In valid responses collected over one week, there are eighty citations, twelve of them to its domain: a 15% share. Seven of those twelve point to the same guide. The team decides to inspect that guide and report the concentration by page, without presenting twelve different pieces of content as cited.

## How to apply or verify

Export references with the response ID, URL, and time period. State how repeated citations in the same response are counted, how subdomains are grouped, and which collection failures are excluded. Manually check a few rows and recalculate the numerator and denominator. When comparing periods, keep the questions, platform, filters, and counting rule consistent across samples.

## Important distinctions

Citation share is not the rate of responses that cite the domain: that uses responses as the unit. It also does not indicate how many unique sources appeared. Some providers may use [share of sources](/en/resources/glossary/share-of-sources) as a synonym; confirm the methodology before comparing. Displayed references do not prove human readership, visits, or that all the text came from the page.
