# Citation rate

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) rate is the proportion of responses that include a reference to the domain, page, or set of sources defined in the analysis. The metric should state both what counts as a citation and which responses make up the baseline. Some analyses use all valid responses; others consider only responses with references. The results are not interchangeable.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this measure helps track whether owned content is being used as a visible source. It complements brand-name presence and helps identify pages that support responses. It can also guide investigations into a missing domain, an old URL that is frequently cited, or topics where references are exclusively external.

## Example in practice

Of one hundred valid responses, twenty cite the official domain. Using the full set as the baseline, the rate is 20%. If only fifty responses include any source, the share among responses with sources would be 40%. These are different readings of the same data. Repeating five links from the domain in a single response does not count as five citing responses.

## How to apply or verify

Define the domain and its variants, handle redirects, and normalize URLs without removing important differences. Separate collection failures and document the unit used. Compare platforms individually, since source displays may vary. When investigating a change, open the pages and check whether the citations support information relevant to the audience's decision.

## Important distinctions

Citation rate does not measure visits, sales, or automatic trust in the brand. A page may be cited to criticize information, and a displayed link may never receive a click. Commercial interpretation requires examining the response context and combining this metric with description, intent, and browsing data when available.
