# Citation gap

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) gap is an observed difference in a set of responses: competitors’ sources receive references in a given snapshot, while the domain being analyzed does not. The snapshot needs to specify the questions, platforms, and period. In Profound’s terminology, Citation gap guides this comparison; the label does not prove that the company is absent from every possible response on the subject.

## Why it matters for marketing

The concept helps marketing teams investigate opportunities based on a concrete subject, rather than creating content just because the brand appeared infrequently. Competitors’ pages may clarify a detail that the company’s own site omits. The decision depends on commercial relevance and source suitability: not every difference warrants a new publication or indicates a flaw in the existing page.

## Example in practice

Suppose a language school tracks questions about evening courses in Recife. In twelve valid responses from one platform over a week, two competing schools have their class schedule pages cited, while the school being analyzed does not. The team opens those references, finds class information missing from its own site, and decides to update its schedule page before expanding its content topics.

## How to apply or verify

Define the competitors and set of questions before comparing. Count only valid responses and record which URLs support the difference, keeping track of the platform, language, location, and period. Check whether the reference belongs to the competitor or to a third party describing it. Then review the page content; the proposed fix needs to address the observed need.

## Important distinctions

A citation gap differs from a [content gap](/en/resources/glossary/content-gap): a relevant page may exist without being cited in the sample. The company may also be mentioned without a link to its domain. A collection with no usable response is a failure, not confirmed absence. Repeating the analysis under comparable conditions helps assess persistence, but does not show that an edit caused new citations.
