# Chunk optimization

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Chunk optimization is the adjustment of the segments a system uses to index and retrieve information. It involves deciding where to split a document, how much context to preserve, and when to repeat passages across segments. The goal is to provide units that are useful for a specific task while respecting processing limits. Size and strategy depend on the content, the queries, and the system.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this comes up when evaluating an internal search or a database used by assistants. If a commercial condition is separated from the information it limits, the retrieved material may support an incomplete answer. The content team needs to explain which relationships must remain understandable; whoever implements [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) should check the segments actually produced.

## Example in practice

Imagine a catalog database in which a question about whether a chair’s finish is suitable for outdoor use retrieves the fabric description but not the restriction on that use, recorded immediately afterward. The technical lead inspects the split and finds the restriction in another chunk. Before adopting a different approach, they test a segmentation that keeps the finish and restriction together.

## How to apply or verify

Create representative questions and identify which passages should support each answer. Compare strategies using the same queries, examining the retrieved text, missing context, and repetitions. For the chair catalog, check that the finish and restriction appear together. Record the configuration and database version so that any observed difference can be attributed to the condition actually compared in the test.

## Important distinctions

Writing self-contained sections can help preserve meaning, but it does not determine the cuts made by an external service. [Chunking](/en/resources/glossary/chunking) is the operational division; [atomic content](/en/resources/glossary/atomic-content) is an authoring choice. There is no universal size in words or required overlap percentage. Retrieving the right passage also does not show that it will be cited or generate conversions.
