# Branded search growth

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Branded search growth, or branded search lift, is an increase in searches for a brand by name within a defined dataset and period. Measurement depends on the source used and the queries included. Impressions from the site itself for branded queries can serve as observable evidence, but they do not represent all market searches or unique people.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, tracking this movement helps investigate name-based interest that may emerge after advertising, recommendations, news, or contact with AI-generated answers. The change needs to be interpreted alongside these activities and seasonality. An increase following more mentions in assistants suggests a hypothesis to investigate; temporal proximity does not show that they caused all the searches.

## Example in practice

Imagine a clinic that sees more impressions for queries containing its name after appearing in AI-generated answers. That same week, it launched a radio campaign. The team records both events, keeps the same brand filter, and compares equivalent periods. It presents the observed growth as name-based searches in that specific scope, without attributing it exclusively to the assistants' answers.

## How to apply or verify

Define the spellings, variations, and possible namesakes included in the query. In [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console), check filters, country, device, and period; anonymized queries and truncation limit the dataset. Compare the same metric and record rule changes. If calculating a percentage change, state the starting and ending values: a zero starting value does not allow a conventional percentage growth figure to be presented without further explanation.

## Important distinctions

A search for a brand by name does not necessarily indicate positive recognition, purchase intent, or conversion. A crisis can also increase searches. Clicks, impressions, and volume estimates measure different things; results from different sources should not be treated as interchangeable counts. Attributing incremental growth to an action requires an analysis suited to the question and its possible confounding factors.
