# Brand-owned citation

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A brand-owned [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) is a reference in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) to content under the editorial control of the brand being analyzed. It may point to documentation, a product page, or a corporate article. Classification depends on identifying who operates the source and which brand is being observed, not on assessing whether the content is favorable or technically correct.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, distinguishing this source shows which cited pages the team can review directly. The analysis helps route an information issue to the right owner: product, content, or documentation. It also prevents treating every corporate citation as the brand’s own presence, since an answer about its category may point to another company’s or a competitor’s website.

## Example in practice

Imagine a booking platform whose documentation is cited to explain cancellation rules. The team opens the referenced URL and confirms that the portal belongs to the company, but the passage still describes a discontinued policy. It classifies the reference as a brand-owned source and sends the page to the product team to review the rule presented to readers.

## How to apply or verify

Open the reference and record the final page, domain operator, authorship, and relationship to the focal brand. Compare the cited passage with the response’s claim. Keep a reviewable list of owned properties, including portals with different URLs. With shared hosting, the domain alone may not identify who controls that page or its content.

## Important distinctions

A brand-owned source describes editorial control, not quality, truthfulness, or brand endorsement. In Profound’s study of citation sources, brand covers properties of any company, including competitors; therefore, this group does not automatically correspond to the focal brand’s own sources. Citing an official page also does not prove that the response accurately reproduced its terms or that the user visited it.
