# Author markup

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Author markup is the structured representation of who signs a piece of content, using properties and types appropriate to the document. For Article, Google recommends identifying authors as people or organizations, with names and references that help distinguish them. The declaration should match the authorship shown on the page; adding a name or profile does not demonstrate experience, qualifications, or actual participation.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, checking authorship helps keep editorial responsibility and identity consistent across the byline, profile, and markup. A namesake or former author may be wrongly credited when a template reuses data. The team needs to clarify who wrote, who reviewed, and who publishes the material, without combining these roles under a generic name or treating [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data) as professional certification.

## Example in practice

Imagine a technical article signed by two researchers, while its markup retains only the name of a former editor. The team confirms the bylines and profiles of both authors, corrects the separate fields, and checks the published page. The article then declares the corresponding authorship, without inventing academic titles or transferring authorship to the person who published it.

## How to apply or verify

Compare the visible byline with the declared authors and open the linked profiles. In the name field, use the author's name, keeping job title and organization in the appropriate properties when relevant. Google's guidance recommends including all authors shown and separating multiple authors. Validate the structure and check the identity, as well as documenting legitimate changes to editorial attribution.

## Important distinctions

Author, reviewer, and publisher are not interchangeable roles. Person describes a person; Organization can represent an authoring organization, as appropriate. A profile URL needs to identify the same [entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity), not just a namesake. Correct markup can clarify authorship for systems that process it, but it does not prove credentials or guarantee ranking, recognition of expertise, or selection by any AI model.
