# Attribution

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Attribution is the process of distributing credit for a relevant action among touchpoints or channels in a user journey. The result depends on the model, time windows, and available data. One rule may give credit to the last observed touchpoint; another may distribute it among several. Attribution describes how credit is calculated; it does not automatically demonstrate what caused the action.

## Why it matters for marketing

In AI discovery, some of the journey may not generate an identifiable click. A recommendation read in an assistant may be followed by a brand search, a direct visit, or contact days later. For marketing, this calls for caution when interpreting reports. The source of a session explains one observed step; it does not necessarily explain the entire path to purchase.

## Example in practice

A buyer reads an AI comparison, visits an article, receives a newsletter, and schedules a conversation through the website. Depending on the model and what was recorded, credit may go to the newsletter, the referral, or other touchpoints. Saying that one of these channels alone “generated the sale” requires evidence beyond the attribution rule used.

## How to apply or verify

First define the business action to be tracked and validate its recording. Document the model, period, window, and source dimensions used. Combine analytics data with CRM data and customer reports when appropriate. When comparing reports, check whether the rules are equivalent before concluding that a channel's performance has changed.

## Important distinctions

Attribution is not incrementality. Estimating how much an intervention added to the outcome requires an appropriate evaluation design, such as a controlled comparison when feasible. In day-to-day work, reports can support decisions without promising this proof. Present signals of presence, visits, and conversions with their own limitations, avoiding the construction of a causal chain from correlations.
